Well, out in the northwest here, migration starts in Mid July when Hummers start leaving the mountains where they mostly breed and head to the valleys and then move south. Mountain flowers start to dwindle by mid summer due to lack of summer rains. So they breed early and move out early. Which, is good for people like me who live in the valleys and don't get hummers as breeders. My hummers start showing up at the end of June and stay until about early September.

It is definitely possible for migration in MI to start now. In fact, it would be surprising if any male Ruby-throats were even left up there as many begin to leave after females finish nesting and the chance to breed is eliminated.

For all of us true hummer fans its a bitter-sweet time of year you will see more birds just before than slowly vanish into the south. I too have had more hummers this year than previous yrs, but the last couple of days its almost like they are flocking , which we know they dont. Ive had at least twice as many as normal. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, then shed a tear when they leave as I will and not feel the least bit ashamed for it

This is my first year for hummers. I had a few hummers maybe three times a day at my feeder. This weekend I couldn't even change the feeders there were ten out there at one time. I got "cussed" out trying to get the feeder to change the nectar. I ended up hanging an extra feeder. I think I saw five different types of hummers this weekend. At one time they were all sitting in a row on the wire above my driveway. They were fighting with one another too. I am going to be so sad when they are gone. I was hoping they would stay through September.

This is my first year for them also. There have been even more of them in the past few days. What a wonderful gift to be able to watch them. I feed the birds who stay through the winter, but will be waiting eagerly for the hummingbirds to return in the spring.
