Hummingbird Garden

saw hummingbird drinking water

i just saw the strangest thing yesterday.... i just got back from being out of town for 2 weeks, and had taken my feeders down. well the hummies were just glad to see me,, and a male bird was perched in the side of my saucer-shaped feeder.. the one with the water-filled ant guard.. he took a few sips of the nectar, but then hovered over the center of the feeder several times, drinking water! i have never seen them drink straight water before. is this common? (temp was about 101.)

I have not had experience with that myself, but when my sister lived in arizona she said she saw them drink from a fountain spray that they had in their yard. I guess they will take what they can get when they are thirsty

Hi Steve

I too saw them drink from a fountain type source in Arizona. I took this picture in Mesa in 2003 in the back yard of my nephew's house.

Here in Virginia my wife has had them come down and drink from a hose she was holding, while spraying her flowers.
