You may be dumb, but no one should be dumb alone. I also have no idea how to post photos. People do all sorts of strange things at this site that I don't know how to do, but the only one that bugs me is the photos; that I'd like to do.

Here is a simple way.

1. Size your image to about 600x400 and less than about 100kb.

2. Upload your image to a website that allows DIRECT linking. If you need a free site, try Photobucket.com.

3. Copy and Paste the URL (address of the image that will usually end with .jpg) into your message here using the HTML code:

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers, you can Right Click on an image,select Properties and there you will see the URL.

The HTML code that you Copy and Paste into your message will look something like this:

Don't leave a space between the 4.Use the Preview button before you post to make sure the image is appearing properly.

If you use Photobucket, the image you upload will appear as a small thumbnail. Just below that you will see the "Tag." Copy and Paste the Tag into your message here just as you did in the paragraph above. The Tag is the HTML code and the URL combined for you.See the sample image of the Photobucket thumbnail below.

Yep, the bigger the size of an image the harder, (Longer it takes.), it is for someone with dial-up to access. I usually always size my images to 480 X 360 pixels and save them in compressed jpeg format at 70% compression and try to keep them as small as possible without losing overall quality.

While we're on the subject of "How do you ... " , I have a question. Even though I have Spybot running on my computer, I am still getting spyware that has slowed my computer tremendously -- this has happened just since Spike sold Gardenweb to IVillege. Is there anything else I can run to get rid of spyware?

What exactly are you experiencing with spyware?

Do you have your firewall turned on?

Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 or a pop-up blocker installed?

I suggest you also run Ad-Aware and Microsoft AntiSpyWare Beta (both are free). Plus, remember to check for updates on Spybot and the two new ones.

Once you run those,clean out your Temporary Internet Cookies (Tools, Internet Options,Temporary Internet Files and Delete Files).

I've switched to Firefox instead of Internet Explorer,as it seems to allow me more control over pop-ups and spyware.

Lastly, install an antivirus program if you don't have one (and keep it updated). AVG is a good free one.

What am I experiencing? When I come to this forum now (this just started in the last few months -- since changover to IVillege) my browers runs much slower. It takes longer to pull up each post when I click on it. This doesn't happen at another forum (not IVillege) I visit. My computer performs just as fast as it always did at the other forum.

Yes, my firewall is always turned on. Nothing has changed there.

I use Windows 2000 Professional, and Netscape Navigator browser with pop-up blocker turned on. No change there either.

I have used Norton Internet Security with Norton Antivirus for years. No change there either.

Spybot is set to check for updates each time before it runs.

I do PC maintenance pretty often. I shoot for once a month but it is usually more like every other month. I clean out the temporary internet files, run ScanDisk and DiskDefragmenter and a few other things (have a checklist that I follow).

I tried downloading Firefox not long after it first came out. When it asked if I wanted to tranfer my bookmarks, I said yes and it caused to computer to freeze up. Tried it twice -- same thing happened both times. (I have a lot of bookmarks.)

Did you ever use Netscape Navigator? When you click on a link and it is loading that link, if it is slow to load, you can read the name at the bottom of the browser. Since I have had problems with slow loading at this forum, I have noticed that I can read the names of the spyware at the bottom of the browser -- many of the same names I see after running Spybot where Spybot lists the names of the spyware it has found. That is why I am blaming spyware for the slowness of loading posts at this forum.

As I said earlier, I don't have problems anywhere else but the GardenWeb forums.

When I have more time this weekend, I will check on the Microsoft AntiSpyware. Have you compared its performance with Spybot or Adaware? I used to use Adaware (from Lavasoft) but when I ran Adaware first and then came back and ran Spybot immediately afterward, Spybot found spyware that Adaware missed. Just because all this maintenance takes so long, I quit using Adaware and just used Spybot.

If you have lots of bookmarks it will take what seems like forever . . . just walk away and let it do it's thing. I too had the same problem and it worked once I left it alone long enough to finish. (Same thing when importing lots of e-mail messages into Mozilla Thunderbird.) I only use Internet Explorer when a web page I totally trust requires it for one reason or another.

I like Microsoft Antispyware,but can't compare it to anything else. Never tried Netscape Navigator. Firefox is great for most things;plus,it has a nifty little (easy to install and use) add-on called Adblock.

Lately there seems to be more pop-ups and other forms of advertising (underlined words)on this site;but, I don't think there is any Spyware here,just ads.

bobky: Best anti-virus scanner I've ever used, (And I've used many over the past many years!), is NOD32. It is even recommended by Leo Laporte, the Computer Guy that broadcasts on KFI AM640 (Los Angeles) on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 11:00am to 2:00pm.

As for the best anti-spy program . . . that's tougher as not one of them catches everything. The two I find that do the best job together are NoAdware and XoftSpy. (What the one doesn't catch the other one does!)

Bob, I have to humbly disagree with you about the spyware.

One nice feature about Netscape (beside the pop-up blocker) is that it has a little bar at the bottom of the screen that shows what the browser is "doing" for lack of a better description. For example, when I place the curser over a link, the www address at the top of the browser screen shows up in the bar at the bottom, to indicate that is where the next page will load once the link is clicked. After the link is actually clicked on, the bar shows a series of steps, such as: "Connecting to ..." , then Waiting for ...", "Transferring to ...". Most of the time it goes through this series so fast it is hard to read, but when I am on a webpage that loads slow (like Gardenweb Forum does now), it is easier to read.

One of the items I read most often while I am waiting for Hummingbird Garden Forum to load a link I have clicked on is: Double Click. This just happens to be one of the spywares found every time I run Spybot.

Just now, before I posted this message, I ran Spybot and quarantined all the spyware that it found. Then I came back to Hummingbird Garden Forum and read all the other posts that had been posted since this morning. I did not go to any other webpage other than Hummingbird Garden Forum. Immediately after reading the Hummingbird Garden Forum posts I closed my Netscape browser and ran Spybot a second time. It found the following spyware: Double Click and Avenue A.

These two were picked up in the few minutes that it took to read the messages posted on the Hummingbird Garden forum since this morning.

I questioned the computer guy who installed the network at our office about spyware and he said it is really getting bad and is going to be worse than viruses because people are getting paid by advertisers to develop spyware (unlike the people who write viruses).

Something else that I have noticed --- Each time after I run Spybot and quarantine all the spyware it finds, I have to sign in with my username and password at Gardenweb before I can post a new message. I am not required to sign in any other time except after running Spybot.

Could that be something to do with cookies ? just a thought. Sarah

Sarah, I just googled Double Click, and the first link that showed up is a link for NoAdware (the anti-spy program mentioned by Frank). The link info for NoAdware says: "Double Click Removal. NoAdware.net. 2005 Most-Advanced Spyware Remover. Fix your computer. Free Download."

Oh okay I have alot of that stuff on my computer too but I just don't understand it all it is confusing. and Oubliette I'm ashamed to tell you I spent money on a course called "How to fix your computer"and I didn't learn a thing but we, the students did get his card to call him if we needed to have it repaired he said he was cheaper than the rest in the area. I was going to call to set up a wireless connection but I lost this card. Ah well such is life. Sarah

It's OK to disagree with me :) I just ran Spybot after reading your message and no spyware was found.

BTW, I block Double Click from setting cookies :) I'm certain you can do the same with Netscape. Using Firefox, I go to Tools,Options, Privacy, Exceptions and then type in doubleclick.com and click Block. Using Internet Explorer, I have it blocked using:Tools,Internet Options,Security,Restricted Sites, Sites and type in doubleclick.com, Add and OK.

I'm not familiar with Frank's suggestions,but they are worth a try.

Thanks Frank, I did that a few days ago and checked out many sites like ClipArt.com, but am having trouble finding the decorative elements in the plantt category that I need. The Microsoft Office online site actually had the most choices of the type I am searching for, but still did not have most of what I need.

I am publishing a fifty page yearbook and want some decorative "plant" border and filler clips that are similar (perhaps in colors) but not identical. The clipart should be similar enough to create a unifying effect rather than a hodgepodge effect.

Years ago I had just the thing needed now, but it ran on MSDOS and I threw it away when I got rid of my first computer.
