Hummingbird Garden

One dumb bird

Up till 1st of last week we had been feeding 1/2 gallon day through our 3 feeders. Monday 2 went empty, but 3rd still full. Then we saw him. This guy was guarding feeder, and fought off every newcomer. So I switched feeders and didn't refil his. He has guarded this empty feeder all week. We're now feeding less than 40 oz per day, so have sent a few south, eventhough staying at 90d here. Course probably getting some migrants. Just wondering if this guy will know when to leave.

HenBoy,
Yes he will know when to leave. It is the shortening of the daylight hours that triggers the migration. Generally those that stay behind are the ones that are too old or possibly ill that instinctively know that they can't make the journey.
