I always wonder why they aren't smart enough to figure out that there is way more food in my lawn than one baby needs, so if they share, I'll put out more. I've told them and told them but they haven't listened yet! Isn't it great watching the chase and hearing them chirp each other out!

I am down to one (i think). My resident ones have gone. I'm not sure why this one decided to stay for a few days, it's the fattest hummer I have ever seen and she looks well prepared for the rest of her trip. I am happy to have her even though she is not as social as my residents were, she will get fresh warm nectar every morning as long as she is here. (it got down to the upper 30s here last night)

I have only seen one here before last night. Last night I went out, camera in hand, hoping to see the "one" visitor. Well, I was so surprised to see two at my neighbor's feeder at the same time and two others chasing here and there. Maybe I am just not very bright, and I have been seeing more than one all along. Anyway, I took a couple pictures of one on the feeder. I was using my regular camera, so I won't know what I got until I finish the roll. They didn't seem interested in coming to visit my salvia or B&B last night.

Hi Eddie! Glad to hear you have some visitors too! Yesterday I still had three little ones, today I only had an opportunity to see two at once. One of them has figured out the feeders and is now at an advantage; not having to work so hard for the reward. She chases the others off now as though she's expanding her territory from 3 flower beds to all 5.

After only seeing one plump lady yesterday(thursday)-----this afternoon (friday) I saw one chasing another out of the yard---going to be a great weather weekend here---hope they stick around to enjoy it so I can enjoy them----ED

Ed, glad to know you and Lisa still have hummers. I live in Michigan as well and I was getting concerned as it is getting very cold at night. I still have two little girls too. Yes, it will be nice this weekend and I hope mine stay. I do remember one hummer that stayed well into October. I was so afraid she would freeze. She would sleep on the feeder, so I kept my porch lights on hoping it would make it a little warmer for her.

I just popped in here because I still have a hummer and was concerned it was getting late and too cold. Although I don't use feeders, my garden is full of tender salvias, potted torenias, and fuschias and the purple hyacinth bean and stachys coccinea are still in bloom. It sounds like I shouldn't worry and the weather for the next week is supposed to be warmer than normal.

I have had a late juvenile migrant since last Wednesday. I use both feeders and flowers for my hummers. Sunday was the first time this one had used the feeder. She/He has been using only the salvias, agastaches, cuphea,cannas and honeysuckle until then. She/he was still here early this morning and to tell the truth doesn't seem in any hurry to leave. Maybe she/he knows something we don't here in the Northeast.

Yes it was a BEAUTIFUL weekend for us Michiganders! I think my fat hummer took of sometime Friday I have not seen her since the AM feeding. I do have a skinney little one now that seem to have all 3 feeders to herself I hope she stays and enjoys fattening up leisurly during our great weather. I got my hummer garden planted, glad I decided not to plant it in the rain last week. I was reading an article in an old ( Aug.1979) National Geographic about bird migration. It says that birds stay out in front of weather fronts moving in and use the winds to assist in migtation. Now this would make perfect sence as it was a windy front that moved this warm air in Friday and that when my litte fat girl left. Interesting........

That's right. It is why we look for fallouts in the fall on northwest winds. However, I'm not sure the northwest winds apply to Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Cold winds aloft would rob energy, something that hummingbirds, especially ruby-throats, have in short supply. For larger birds it is not just the speed of the winds that matters. Cool winds keep hard working migrants from overheating on long flights.

I still have two also. I'm afraid I have gotten used to seeing them pretty much every time I look outside. I'm very spoiled this year! They especially like the cuphea and salvias and Cannas. Many of the plants they used earlier are no longer used, even thought they are still in pretty good shape.

they are both gone---must have left together on sunday---no sightings on monday---they were both females so hopefully one or both will be back next spring to start a family--seems like a long time away---ED

I thought mine were gone and was about ready to remove the feeder...then one showed up yesterday and I made some more sugar water. Anyway the sweat bees are really eating it up.

Every time I think mine are gone, I get another migrator! I get a day or two with none and then all of a sudden I have another chubby little girl come thru for a day or two!!! It's still as exciting everytime as it was the day I saw my first ever hummer! The last three I've had are so chubby in the belly, I'm not sure how they stay up!
