It must be nice to be able to plant this time of year, and even better to expect Anna's Hummingbirds through the winter. The leucantha should certainly do the trick for you, since it keeps flowering all winter. Let us know how your new garden does over the winter. Back here in Jack Frost country we're about to enter the mental stage of gardening. We'll be landscaping castles-in-sky until about April.

I do winter sow. By mid February there are hundreds of plants under lights and dozens of cuttings growing in the florida room. My wife has serious issues with the takeover of her florida room during the cold months. I've had to explain to her that what I've done is condensed summer and stuck it on the porch. That considering what a big place summer is,I've actually done pretty well keeping it in tight containment. What a relief it is in mid April when many of the pots can come outside by the garage for hardening off. That's usually the point when I realize that there isn't enough garden space to contain everything. We already have 7 large flower beds and a veggie garden. My wife justifiably wonders where is it all going to end. Beds need weeding and deadheading and watering and where did all the time go?

See the link below for my Galvezia speciosa source. I bought mine as a small plant but the place also has a mail order seed catalog. They are located in the San Fernando Valley, so if you'll be in or near L.A. it's pretty close.They are also having a big "fall festival" Oct 8-9.

The Galvezia sp. was a satisfying purchase for me, since they are native to the Channel Islands off shore from where I live, and they are considered an endangered species.
