It appears that you have a great opportunity to see many types of hummers : ) I wouldn't wait until spring. It may take a lil time for them to find your feeder though so keep it fresh. If you have a plant or two nearby that they like I bet that would help them find it even sooner. Anyway, good luck and post when you see em, k : )

You have an excellent chance of having a few vagrant hummers now. I would suggest that you fill a feeder with fresh nectar ( 1 part sugar to 4 parts water no red food coloring needed) and hang it out now. There are quite a few Rufous, Black Chinned, and even a few Annas that overwinter in S. La. The Rubythroats will start their northern migration probably in March. When the days are really warm feeders should be cleaned and refilled every 2-3 days to prevent mold from growing. Start out with only a few ounces in the feeder. Once you start seeing hummers come to the feeder you can increase the amount of nectar in the feeder. Once they find your feeder, you will probably have to refill the feeder more than once a day. I grew up in Shreveport and I had to refill my feeders sometimes 3 times a day during the spring and summer.

I'm in Baton Rouge and have a couple of Rufus hummers over-wintering in my yard this year. As Penny says, there are several species that over-winter around here, so get a couple of feeders going. Rufus seem to be particularly feisty, so maybe put one up in the front and one in the back. I hear my Rufus talking to me every morning when I go out to put bird seed out -- they make a "kissy-clicking" noise that is very distinctive. They like to roost and hide in evergreen plants, so if you can locate your feeders near a holly, azalea, live oak, camellia, or something else that is not deciduous you will be doing them a favor.

Lately I've had an Orange-crowned warbler sharing the hummer feeders -- they are NOT pleased, let me tell you!
