A lot of plants will do quite well in pots for you as long as they receive adequate water and have good drainage. When I first started gardening for hummers in NY, most of my hummer plants were in containers including an azalea and a weigelia shrub. I have also grown a native honeysuckle vine in a very large container. Other plants that will do well in containers are:
Salvia coccineas, and guaraniticas (tender perennial)
Monarda 'Jacob's Cline' (perennial)
Agastaches (some are tender perennial)
Cardinal vine (annual)
Cypress Vine (annual)
Zinnias (annual)
Cannas (tender perennial)
Petunias (annual)
Million Bells (annual)
Nasturtiums (annual)
Hardy Hibiscus (perennial)
Tripcal Hibiscus (tender perennial)
Rose of Sharon (hardy shrub/tree)
Red morning glory (ipomoea coccinea) (annual)
Hostas (perennial)
Impatiens (annual)
Ipomopsis (perennial)
Lantana (tender perennial)
Gartenmeister bonstadt fuschia (tender perennial)
Coral Honeysuckle vine (perennial)
Weigelia shrub (hardy shrub)
Azalea (some are hardier than others)

Most of these like sun with the exception of Impatiens, azaleas, hostas and fuschias which do better in some shade and moist soil.

Another thing to consider is that even though some of these plants are hardy they may not survive the winter in containers. You would have to put them where they receive some shelter. Some plants would need very large containers since they have extensive root systems or deep tap roots.
