using herbs as part of IPM

I want to spread my herbs out so they aren't concentrated in one herb garden, and instead use them in my veggie garden to help with insect management. My strongest candidate for this is lemon balm, which has a very strong root system, but I also have some lavendar coming back from last year, and I have seeds for corriander and garlic chives.

Are there websites that advise on which herbs best 'protect' certain vegetables, or is it generally positive just to place herbs a certain distance apart around veggie plantings? How close together should the herb plantings be, if there are veggies growing around them?

Those are all my questions for now. Thanks!
