Companion planting for pot grown maple

Hi All,

I've just aquired a 12' pot grown A. Palmatum (broad reddish leaves, possibly an atropurpureum), currently growing a 2.5 cu' tub. I'm about to transplant this into a much bigger (8.5 cu') planter to give it a bit of space.

My issue is that the planter is pretty big, cubic, and unattractive. I'd like to add some trailing plants to soften in up a bit and provide an attractive bottom to what is quite a tall tree.

I would like to keep this in a Japanese theme, so I'm after suggestions of what could work?

I was considering Trachelospermum jasminoides variegatum, but i'm concerned it'll get too big / climb the Acer, although i could prune to keep this in control.

Any other suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.
