Hydroponics with Tweak

I had interest in starting a hydroponics system, but only wanted to try it with the material I had on hand to see if I liked it.
I had the bin, I had medium (pebble rocks), I had plastic nursery pots that I put plenty of holes in, now I didn't have the air stone and pump but I had a small fish filter.
I removed the filter pad and just let it run to circulate the water and add air to it. I originally had pepper plants in it, but they were not fairing too well due to the heat wave we were having. I decided to pull them and plant them into the ground before they died. I was a little frustrated, but wanted to try again. I had some cucumber seedlings and tried it with them. By then, our heat wave was just about done.
5 are doing very well, but the one that was in front of the filters water flow had died. I have 6 holes in the lid.

I also "clean" the water by putting the filter pad back in, and only do a 1/2 water change and replace 1/2 of the nutrients. Seems to be working Ok.

Has anyone else used a filter in place of the air stone and pump? Will post pics in a bit.
