My NEW Hosta Bed

I love looking at all of your beautiful hostas and you inspired me to make my first bed. All the plants were planted within the last 1 1/2 weeks so I don't have anything "showy." Just thought I'd share, too.

I can't wait to watch them grow!

great start but you will have to remove the funny looking weeeds with the orange flowers. lol

looks like s lot of room to expand also ;~)

make sure they get enough water under there. broadcast the water don't spot water the plants with the trees

    Looking good!
But seriously...greenguy wasn't too far wrong. Those "ditch lilies" will grow faster than your hosta and eventually take over. I would get them out of there while you can.

I agree, nice start. I would also recommend that you get rid of the orange lilies or maybe put an underground barrier around them so they can't spread to invade the whole bed. I dug some of these out of a flowerbed a few years ago and sprayed the broken off pieces with roundup and I still have to yank volunteers every now and then.

O.K. I'll "ditch" the ditch lilies. My neighbor gave them to me, so I'll have to make a new bed just for them I guess.

Nice selection! I think you need more! I'd forget about the weed barrier and get the daylilies out for the reasons stated above. If you want plants other than hosta in there also, I would suggest Sweet Woodruff, Japanese Painted Fern, or Ajuga.

I definitely want to add some more plants. I've pretty much reached my budget limit right now for adding anything else for a while. I'll be on the lookout for sales. In the fall we have a plant swap for our area that I hope to attend and pick up some other plants. I have about 24 hostas in this bed. No 2 are alike other than the ventricosa I got from my grandma's old home. I have 3 of those. I think I will go back and get some more since they're free and use them as some filler for now. I tried to leave growing room, but I'm very tempted to fill in those empty spaces. I know it will be a while until my plants mature, so this is a work in progress. I'd like some smaller hostas as most of mine are medium or large, various ferns, and heucheras would be nice, too. Thanks for the input!

I made the mistake of planting those ditch lilies as fillers years ago and been fighting them ever since. You need more than one application of Round-Up to make a dent. Made one application last fall and they come up thicker than ever this spring.

But there is nothing wrong using ventricosa as fillers. A great old hosta. Use as a background when you acquire newer models. Will do well with little care once started. Hope those trees aren't maples.

    Cindy.
Your pics look like mine when I started in 2002. If you go to my hosta website you can look at the BEFORE and AFTER link. It wont take time that your bed will fill up and will look very nice. That's the beauty of hostas...they grow fast...bigger and better, year after year.
