new to iris world

I'm new and thank everyone who answers questions so patiently, I've learned a lot from reading the posts. I have a question about pod parents Vs pollen parents and bicolors (top petals different from the lower petals(falls?)-- I don't know terminology yet.

How do you control which petals change colors? If I like the top of one iris and want to pair it with the falls of another iris, does it make a difference which one is the pod parent Vs pollen parent? What makes the petals variagated versus solid. Are some of these combinations just luck, happy accidents?

Also someone mentioned not crossing old irises with new irises--- where's the line for this? I have one very old, Swerti, and some that are new or in the middle, is the year more important or the frilliness (for lack of a better word)

I've got a lot to learn, but I've been bit big time and am really enjoying these plants...and they grow where I live!!

tia,

shannon
