"yabure" means ripped, gasa/kasa means unbrella. sorry I don't have refference book with me now.

Just a guess here. Cyperus alternifolius is also known as an Umbrella plant. It's from Africa though, not Japan. I suppose it is grown in Japanese gardens in Japan.

Thank you all for your help. I recently found some information on it. Its more commonly known as 'tractor seat plant' has nothing to do with japanese gardens and is named 'japanese parasol plant' because the leaves are similar to a japanese parasol. The botanical name is Farfugium Giganteum. Just thought I would let everyone know that it is problem solved
