Can we play ID these koi? ;)

Would love to know what kind of koi I actually have - perhaps mutts or something but it would be fun to know!

Any input would be appreciated..here we go!

Ok, two here, both butterfly....hmmmm...so maybe they don't get classified anything other than "butterfly"...? Don't know how that works. Anyway, here they are - top one is bright orange w/ black and bottom one is BRIGHT yellow/black:

Gwen (left) and Kirby (right):

Bad photo..sorry.

1) Solid orange one at the top of the photo...now has tiny black polka dots here and there all over...very tiny:

2) Mostly white one w/ orange on it's head under the pack...only the orange is now gone and he's getting blue on his back....looks a lot like Kirby:

The other two at the end of the pack died this winter (BOOHOO!!!)

    Hey Ademink!
I have two similar fish as yours in the top photo that are butterfly as well.Mine are a platinum matsuba and a gold matsuba. Thats about the extent of my koi knowledge! ;)

Carrie, It is a Butterfly Yamabuki Matsuba not gold. Don't ask me why they use Platinum but not gold.

Wow, beautiful!!!! That second one DOES look like mine and the first one looks like Kirby only a butterfly - how pretty! :)

The white one with the black markings is a shiro bekko. A shiro bekko is basically a Sanke with no red. A Shiro Utsuri is another black and white fish, but that's not what you have. A utsuri has showa genetics and the black is more in the form of bands instead of spots. Utsuri often have black pec fins. A bekko will often have striped fins. A bekko shouldn't have any black on it's head but often does (looks like yours will get it later on), where a utsuri usually has black on it's head. Does that help?

Yes, makes sense! So are butterflies just "butterflies" or do they get named in the same manner?

Butterfly or longfins are named the same way, just add longfin or butterfly to the beginning. I like Longfin better....longfin shiro utsuri....sounds nice.

Well tomorrow I`m getting 4 new fish Fedex so I`ll post pics and make sure I know what they are!
Ademink..thanks! I love them. Especially the Platinum...the Yamabuki Matsuba(thanks Mike!)is more of a bottom feeder that pic is in three feet of water. Thats usually where he is to, unless I have a worm for him.How many do you have ? Whats your pond size? I also have a standard fin Kohuka and he`s getting huge!I did join my local koi club. But then I quickly realized that my little fish were pretty pathetic compared to what alot of people buy! But we`re going to have three in college next year and that has to come before the more expensive Koi!! ;)

I am sorry a Shiro Bekko can not have black on it's head. A Shiro Utsuri is a black fish with white and a Shiro Bekko is a white fish with black. Once black is on the head it is no longer a white fish with black but ussually a poor Shiro Utsuri.

A shiro bekko CAN have black on it's head, just as a sanke can have black on it's head. LOTS of poor quality bekkos have misplaced markings. Lots of well-bred ones do too. Having black on the head does not make a bekko turn into a utsuri anymore than black head markings makes a sanke turn into a showa. It is about genetics. Most all Bekkos are from Sanke genetics.

ccombs, there are a lot of border line sanke/showa and bekko/utsuri. Sometimes its hard to tell. I have had sanke develop additional sumi and years later they ARE a showa. Genetics do not clasify what the koi is, its only the pattern. Many Kohaku come from Sanke bloodlines, but that doesn't make them a sanke unless they develop the bekko black.

as for what is in the photos above? In the first photo the koi with the black netting pattern is a Kin Matsuba. When it is yellow, then it is a Kin Matsuba, if white then its a Gin Matsuba. The orange fish with the dark sides and scales down its back in the same photo is a doitsu variety and it is called a kikokuryu. because it is orange it is a Kin Kikokuryu.

In the second photo the lighter fish is a Bekko. The darker fish is tough to spot. a mutt most likely and doesn't really fit into a category. But I would call it an Utsuri I guess. or maybe a dark Matsukawabake? Hard to say really.

In the bottom photo, the all yellow is a Yamabuki Ogon. The orange is probably an Orenji Ogon.

Carrie's photos are a Gin Matsuba and a Kin matsuba
