Another 'Name that Hosta' game!!!

This one I received from Davemidohio--he unceremonially dug it up,(on the spot) grabbed it by the petioles, slung it over his shoulder (wink)

and potted it up for me to take home. I was aghast at his manhandling of it, but he assured me they need that once in awhile to grow

stronger and to let them know who's boss!! That last part I made up, he didn't say the 'boss' part, but I guarantee you, that at least in his

garden--HE's the boss! What awesome hostas he has!

Anyway, he has never been sure of what it is, just that he needed the space for something he likes better. I love it---I love it, that in the spot

I have it, which gets no direct sunlight, the margins remain bright chartreuse throughout the season and the centers a bluish green! But, I'd

sure love to know what it is so I don't duplicate it unknowingly!

I have thought it may be 'Abiqua Moonbeam' or 'Mayan Moon' but it remains more of a medium to small size in my situation!!

Any ideas?

It sure looks like Abiqua Moonbeam,to me! BTW Mayan Moon is the same plant. Mine grows in more sun than yours, and the leaves are a little beat up,from twigs falling on it,but that's my guess, and I'm stickin' to it!! Phil

Thanks Phil! Yes, I know they are the same, basically--and I think it was a pic. of yours, that got me to thinking it may be what mine is,
but, it seems like yours was larger! Do the margins turn yellow if exposed to more sun? If so, I'll definitely keep this one where it is, though
    smaller--probably due to less sun!!!

Okay--it was E.O.'s post of his beautiful A.M. that got me to thinking of the possibility mine is that one, or maybe you did, too,
    Phil at an earlier time!

I agree - Abiqua Moonbeam. One of my favorite hostas for taking photos. Softer colors early, then harder contrasts later in the season. Seems to look good next to most hosta colors.

    Janice,
Ah, yes, I remember it well. I remember telling you that it was tagged as an Iron Gate Delight, but that I was never sure about that diagnosis, even though all the others where I bought it that had the same tag looked the same. The pictures of the Iron Gate series at the HL are pretty unconclusive, but I just don't see a match. (IGD is supposed to be streaked, BTW)

Anyway, here is the little fella I gave you just a day or two before I unceremoniously pushed a shovel under his roots and jerked him out of the ground by his petioles. I remember how you cringed while I just let him kinda dangle there!! I'm telling ya, I thougt you were either going to scream or beat me, the way I mishandled him. (OK, I think of most hah-stas as female, I don't know why I am calling this one a he?)

And here is the other half that I had just found a home for.

In your pic, you have the caption "Who am I?". I don't know who it is, but I know what it is - it's dying!! What I don't understand, Janice, is why you're trying to kill yours!!!! Look how little and scrawny it is!! I know you are growing it in the shade, but gee-wiz. . .

Here is another pic of mine from the same spot and same settings. . . any two leaves would completely cover the younger version!!

To put that in perspective, here is a wider view with my size 12 work shoe. . .

You need to stop by so I can share some of my hostaroids (hosta steriods) with you!!! lol

(Actually, I really like the layered look yours has, instead of mine which is all scrunched up, and the colors on your are way cool. )

Anyway, I hope we can find out what it is. I am going to pay attention to the flowers this year. That might give a clue.

    Your Friend,
    George :-)

HOLY COW, Dave!!! I do need some of those steroids!!! Hey--maybe mine has post-distress syndrome
from your man handling of it!!! LOL

Boy--it sure does look different being in the sun---I just might have to divide mine (yikes--I really don't like
to do that when there are so few divisions) and try half of it 'your way'!!!

But, I really do LOVE this one, for holding that soft minty margin all season--not many do that, I'm finding!!!

Save me some of those steroids, will ya???

Make that 'Post Traumatic Distress Syndrome'!!! LOL See--even I'm affected by the memory--so much so---that I can't think
    straight--even now---it was very harrowing!! ;o)

I should point out---that is a very big shoe--for a very big (not fat) guy!!! LOL

Dave and Janice. Definitely NOT Iron Gate Delight. I have one,and the leaves don't get nearly that wide, even on your "steroids"! I still say Abiqua Moonbeam. Phil

For the benefit of Dave and Janice, here is Iron Gate Delight. Phil

    Janice,
Don't divide yours- I have PLENTY!! I would be more than happy to give you another piece when you pick up the High Noon I already promised you.

I know I keep threatening a road trip and can't seem to find the time, but I have some of both officially allocated to you.

O---kay Dave!!!! You and the wife need to come here one day---it's been awhile since we've seen you!! Steve misses you! LOL

He also misses golf, but there's more chance he'll get to see you, than that he'll ever be able to play golf again!

I really need your steroids---yours seem to just multiply to pieces, while mine look nice but most are not multiplying like that, at all!!
What's the deal with that???? Hmmphh!!!(in a snit now!)

Ok You two--I don't know what it is but it is one happy hosta!!! How old is the original??? I think you could split that among the whole forum and still have leftovers LOL Must love what ever it is you are doing with it.

For comparison, here is Mayan Moon from early June

Nope, don't think it's the one I have but boy---now I want 'Mayan Moon'!! Do the margins stay that color all season?

I LOVE the minty and chartreus margins with bluish green centers on hosta the best--you know---'Frances williams' but without the
obligatory ugliness it will eventually present!! Sigh! Sure wish they could come up with one that has the EXACT look without that
    ugly brown carp!!!
