Iris newbie ---- making a plea

Hi, all!

This is my 5th year w/ a garden and only my 3rd year w/ any iris. Well, I had iris....we found termites in our woodwork and they were also eating the mulch in my flower bed. Yes, the flower bed w/ my iris (that I had painstakingly babied after ordering from cooleys 3 summers ago). My DH, in his termite fury, dug up the entire bed and put it out for yard debris pick up....all this happened while I was at work yesterday and the city has alread come and picked up the debris.

So, why am I posting? I am on my knees, making a plea (shamelessly I might add) to any kind gardener that will be dividing any iris this year. I am happy to pay S&H and can manage a small fee payable to you for your time and effort. We got a quote to treat the house and replace studs and sill beam eaten by the termites.....$6,500+ Ouch. There goes our summer fun, garden, vacation budget.

Last year I divided my iris and gave some to a new gardener but she is not ready to divide them yet.

Thank you for letting me vent here. I am heartbroken and beyond angry at my DH!

Sara

    I, too, am a comparitive newbie(4th season)hobbyist.

I have listed under "exchanges" section my "have to trade" list and my "wish list", there are a bunch I will divide this year. Let me know. Most I will be happy to send for postage, just knowing they are going to an appreciative home.

    Happy to help,

    Irisawe:

Your offer is so very appreciated. At this point, I am not terribly choosy re: which iris. I will say that the bed is against my house which is white and white or really pale iris tend to get lost against the house. That being said, I am really open to anything you'd like to part with.

    Thank you for your offer!

Feel free to email me (check my profile).

A couple weeks ago the next door neighbor gave me his Iris. I had never been impressed with it, or any Irises. I had it planted in the side of my house and promptly forgot about it.

Then a couple weeks later I happen to glance in that direction, and to my amazement it was in full-bloom - more that I had ever seen before. Hump, I thought and went about the day.

A couple days later, I decided since it was here to live, I might as well give it a look over. So I put on my glasses and went outside - WOW, this is what everyone is ranting about, it actually is a nice looking flower.

I had been bitten. I promptly went on the Freecycle Yahoo group for my area and asked for Irises. I picked up some last night that were headed to the garbage can. Tomorrow I get to rescue some that a woman planted along side the North side of her house. Guess she is not impressed with them either - lol. This Fall I have an offer of some that another woman is dividing.

So go on Freecyle Yahoo groups and ask. And in the Fall give a holler! Maybe someone can walk me through the dividing stage - :-)

Here are pics I just took. No clue on what it is

I took your advice and posted a 'wanted' post on the local freecycle and craigslist!

I'll keep my eye on the exchange list as dividing time nearers (and will bookmark this post so I can find you all).

Thanks, everyone, for your input and generosity!

    Hi Sara,
You're hitting me at a good time. I've got to "reduce" as I am getting my house ready to sell. This is a bad time to sell, but it's a much better time to buy, and I desire a big yard.

Sara, if you will look through some of the older posts by me here, you'll see that my iris beds--every one--was hit by landscapers spraying herbicide. If a plant bloomed the flowers were deformed; many buds, however, never even bloomed, stalks were stunted, etc. However, I was assured by several folks on here that the poison will be out of the system of these plants by next spring, and they should be normally blooming. I sure hope so.

Having said all of that, I will be dividing lots, and I'll send you some for postage if you're interested. Hit me at matbeach1@aol.com with "Iris" in the subject line, and I can give you more specifics: cultivar names, photos, etc.

Though we don't normally dig until September, I've got to get cracking early this year.

    Thanks,
    Mike in SC, Zone 8

    sdba/Sara,

If you are particularly looking for named varieties, I can send you some for postage...numerous ones, with a description of the color anyway on each fan. I'm going to be moving some around here in the couple of weeks, though it isn't the best time to do it. About everything I have needs moved somewhere else it seems.

LMK...and yes...please put GW or iris in the email subject line...if you are interested. I'll go now and put pics of them along with descriptions on my member trade page.

I meant to say...If you are not particularly looking for named varieties, I can send you some for postage.

    Sara,
I'd be happy to send you some irises for postage IF I get to divide mine this summer. I have many clumps that need to be divided, but my 4th grandbaby is due in late July and may just put all my gardening chores on hold if he comes earlier than expected since I'll be responsible for watching his 2 year old sister. I'll email you as the time to divide here gets closer.

Shae: Yes, please and thank you! If you get to dividing your iris I will happily take some off your hands (for postage, of course). Congratulations on the impending arrival of your 4th grandbaby! How exciting.

Mike and Sue: I sent you an email this afternoon. Let me know if you do not receive it.
