All of the "pole Cannellini" beans I have seen were white-seeded runner beans. A different species (P. coccineus) than regular Cannellini (P. vulgaris). If you intend to save seeds, remember that they will cross with scarlet runner, but not common beans.

Runner Cannellini has very large seeds, but a much different flavor than the bush Cannellini. Several companies offer them, although I'd have to look them up. SSE sells them in their catalog - not as seeds, but in the back as bulk beans for cooking. Go figure.

I do want the large seed Runner Cannellini so will try the white seeded runner beans this year - need to taste them to determine if they are a keeper for future growing. I saw them in SSE catalog and wondered about the "eating" beans with no "growing" bean seeds.

A half-runner cannellini is available through Seeds of Change. And yes, they are the incredible, huge, tasty cannellini bean, not the bland little white cannellini bush bean. Appreciate the blog!

Zeedman, why don't we just rename Brita's Footlong as Pole Cannellini and solve this problem once and for all?? ;-) - Dick

I think that "Brita's" is certainly good enough to substitute for Cannellini; it's tender & has great flavor, not to mention a high yield. I'm grateful to Salt Spring Seeds for bringing this heirloom into circulation, and to Brita Zuk for sharing it.

Those folks at Salt Spring must have had a run on the Brita Footlong seeds - not even listed on their website now. Drat, drat and double drat :-((

DL, the Salt Spring people quit shipping to the USA some years ago anyway. I have seed for Brita's but there were signs of possible blight among them last summer so I hesitate to offer seeds for them.

I plan to soak them in 3% peroxide for 15 minutes before planting. This is a technique used by some labs for plant tissue sterilization. - Dick
