staking iris?

I planted some iris last fall, and they're starting to bloom now. Its my first time growing them, and I noticed after a thunderstorm, with strong winds, a couple iris were on the ground, with the stems broken. Some others were flopped over, so I staked them. Is this normal, to have to stake them, or did I not plant them deep enough? They are really beautiful, so I don't really mind the extra work of staking, but I was curious if everyone has to do this. The flower stalks are pretty tall, a good 3 ft.
