Iris ID, Odd enough that maybe...

Someone might know it. In person, the color of the tops has more of a smokey quality(if that makes sense, lol) to it than the photos convey.

I put it in late last summer, and it has bloomed great as you can see.

Thanks for any ideas,

Remy

Daylily has a photo at Daves that looks like a dead ringer - Kevin's Theme.

    Iris Gal,
Thank you! It is a dead ringer, photo and member description wise. That it was an Award of Merit and Honorable Mention winner makes sense with the way it looks and has grown.

    You're welcome.

I think it looks more like In Your Dreams. I have both Kevins Theme and In Your Dreams and that looks more like In Your Dreams.

    Hi K,
Now I'm confused, lol. I did do a search of In Your Dreams and its photos seems to have a lot less purple on top than the Kevin's Theme photos. Here's another shot of my iris.

    Study the ribs.

In Your Dreams has rib pigment that extends slightly into the petal.

Kevin's Theme has rib pigment which is also the major color of the petal.

On the gallery someone recommended In Your Dreams as an ID for another very different iris. Again the ribs do not match up. Perhaps some seller is selling a mis-label?

This is the thing about iris!! I have had both K.T. and I.Y.D. for 4 years. K.T. is distinctly darker pigment normally. I say "normally" for a reason. There were stalks coming up in several places in my garden due to having divided last year. I found I was struggling to dintinguish them apart. Both of them looked much darker as the bloom initially unfolded than it did, let's say, 8 hours later(after work). Some of my K.T. didn't even look like they could be K.T. the pigment was so much more saturated than what I expected. Both were easier to distinguish as the bloom would just start to fade. It was much clearer then who had to be whom. Yes, they were labeled and I had to check and recheck labelling because it was so confusing. The bottom line was either one showed a startling range of variation in how dark the colors were, both the purple and the yellowish edging and they looked different in different parts of the garden where there would have been both sun exposure and soil variations. These both affect pigmentation and this isn't all that affects pigmentation.

Truer bottom line is they were both beautiful and put on an
amazing show. That is part of the fun of it is any one of them can look more amazing as each year goes by. Each year has been different for me.

I have never been attracted to that iris in the online catalogs, but your photos show it off well. It's really pretty.

    Remy,

I remember that you said you thought I had sent you the iris...well I have Kevin's Theme. Got it in 2008 I think, (maybe 2007) and it is prolific. I have however not seen it bloom for me yet, which is why I said I had never seen it before. If mine blooms next year I can then tell you if it looks like my Kevin's Theme. I got my from a local Iris Farm, so I'm thinking it is most probably identified correctly.
I redid the bed it was in early this year, so that is why I didn't get to see it bloom this year.

    Hi Sue,
Well then it has to be Kevin's Theme! I was pretty positive it came from you, but when you didn't recognize it, I though I must of had a stray from an earlier trade held in a pot that got planted at the same time as the irises you sent me.
It is a beauty! You'll love it when it blooms. : )

Ok, it is coming back to me a bit now...I think you sent me 2 roses and probably some other goodies late 2008 and then I sent you my half of the trade, (irises and ?) in 2009.

Yes it is a beauty and I'm really looking forward to it now.

    Sue
