What type of wood are the cabinets???? We are looking at Alder to get a light warmth but worried they might be too soft. Love this look!

Yes, these are alder. Alder is one of the softer hardwoods, so it's more likely to acquire dings/ dents over time than, say, cherry. The advantage of alder, though, is that it maintains a consistent color over time, and costs less than cherry. Cherry is a good alternative to alder if you want a more durable wood, but it does cost more and does darken over time.
