How long to keep plants close to light?

I have some lettuce plants that are about a few weeks old. The leaves are getting so big that they are starting to hang off the edges of the container. I also have some that are still small (a week old or less). I was wondering how long you have to keep plants very close to a light source. I still have them under the lights but the bigger ones are not right up close to the light as the smaller ones. I needed to make room on my raised flats for the ones that need to be really close so I moved the bigger ones.
