Beans can be started indoors if necessary, but it is not the easiest, most foolproof method because it is difficult to provide the proper growing conditions indoors. I would guess that most gardeners, myself included, have never started beans indoors. Direct seeding them in the garden is easy.

On Long Island, I would think that planting the seeds outdoors a couple of weeks from now would bring the most success. They grow quite rapidly and you should get an early harvest.
