I divide mine in the fall when the foliage turns brown, but if they aren't up yet, there really shouldn't be any problem. I did dig one spring when the foliage was just starting to come up, I was really careful but still broke off a couple of them. The rest grew & bloomed nicely though. Fall is really the best time.
