How close are you to being able to get them in the ground? If Stillwater is where you are - Oklahoma is one thing; in Stillwater, Minnesota you'd need an ice auger to dig holes.

Yes, you can plant them that way. And yes, the new shoots are delicate so not breaking them off is going to be a major priority. Bulbs should still be planted @6" deep and any sprouting that is above ground when the bulb is planted at the appropriate depth is fine - the sprouts will green up once planted.

so what happened? i did the same thing, got some bulbs from HD, put them in the garage, was hospitalized several times and forgot about them til this morning. we're getting garden ready now, i'm planting some new things, previous stuff blooming now, but want to have my bulbs blooming too!

i'm in n. ca too, east bay. so what happened? i'm wondering if i should try to plant mine too....?

One thing is certain: if you do not plant them , they will not grow.
