Need planting tips

I just dug up a huge bunch of Iris that didn't bloom this year. The clump had been infested with grass, so I carefully pulled out the grass and all the grass roots I could see. I know they need to be planted shallowly, and these were. Would the grass have prevented them from blooming? My native soil is sandy with gravel, but my rose beds have been heavily amended with good garden soil and compost. Which conditions would the iris prefer?

Now I have 20-30 anonymous Iris plants. Do I replant now, or pack them away in a box and replant in the fall? How much sun will they need? (Prime sunny spots in my garden go to roses.) Will they survive and bloom in part-sun conditions? If so, morning or afternoon sun? If I pack them away, do I try to keep the roots moist or do I pack them dry? Will deer bother them?
