Impossible to tell without a picture but runner beans are prone to black aphid infestations. I ignore them and wait for the ladybirds. But that does require that you hold your nerve because it can look awful. And in some environments/conditions they may never turn up.

If you want to be more proactive I'd just blast with water rather than washing up liquid. As to not getting their leaves wet how do they cope when it rains?
