I'm pretty sure that's some sort of leaf miner or other tunneling insect pattern. They are very tiny, hard to see, but they get into the leaf.

I think you are right Cindy! Thanks for the response. I cann see the little yellow buggers all over the leaves that are "marbly" from their tunnels. I've removed all the leaves that were severly infected. Any other advice? My tops look real healthy, but from what I'm reading leaf miners can be devastating. Most of what I can find is not particular to beans. I'm also concerned about my tomatoes 10 feet away.

Burn those leaves, right away.

Oy. Next day I watered in the morning, plants were fine. When I came home in the afternoon they were completely devoured. I think its the gophers, as they are quite the problem here. If I grow the beans in containers will the gophers stay away? I think these are pretty done for. Should I try to save them?

I grew beans once in containers - I'm in Middle GA - it gets HOT here. They grew, but were not at all what they should be. I used a cattle tub thing - ~ 10 inches deep, black, filled with good soil, holes in bottom, in good sun and got puny beans. But it is HOT...

Those plants can still recover. For below ground pests, buy a mole trap. For above ground pests, ring with 1x2 or chicken wire.
