If you stick it in a pot with loose soil, you can sometimes cause the stem to produce little bulblets which can ultimately grow. I've done it before, and that's how I get more plants.

I have always been told that if the stem breaks off the bulb that will be the end of the plant until the next year. It is understandable because the bulb provides the nutrients to feed the stem and produce the bloom. You may want to try the advice above, but I think your chances of having a bloom this year are nil.
