One of the nice things about iris, minis in particular, they are easy to keep at a manageable size. I divide mine about every 3-4 years to keep the plant about a foot across.

There are miniature TALL irises (MTB) which bloom at a height of 16-27 1/2" and miniature DWARF irises (MDB) which bloom at a height of up to 8". MDBs bloom several weeks earlier than MTBs. MDBs also typically grow smaller clumps than MTBs, though there can be a great deal of variation depending on the vigor of the particular cultivar in your own garden. As Kathy mentioned, you can manage the size of any clump by dividing it and removing excess rhizomes when the clump overgrows its allotted space.

Correction...
Mine are all SDB irises ( thankgod they won't get too tall for the beds). Butterscotch Carpet (yellow) and Vavoom (Bicolored yellow/white). Very dainty and cute looking!
