Linda, Iris are very tough plants. If it is dry I always water mine when I first plant them. Too much water is worse than too little water. My guess is that the iris will be OK. Just don't plant them too deeply. I guess it depends on where you live. I live in the south and lightly cover the top of the rhizome with dirt. Lee Mincy

I agree with Linda. I had found a box chock-full of iris rhizomes in my basement. I thought they were too dried up, but decided to plant them in a tucked-away part of my garden in the middle of summer just in case any of them had a little life left. Now, we had a hot, dry summer in my part of Pennsylvania this year. Within 1-2 weeks, every single rhizome had poked it's head through the soil. I bet ya each rhizome I planted came up, and I think I only watered this planting twice this summer! But, as Linda said, do NOT plant them too deep. It is OK if the top of the rhizomes poke through the soil. If you plant irises too deeply, they will not bloom. Also, the first year your irises may not bloom. They need at least 4 to 5 leaves in a fan to set blooms. Good luck!

I agree with the statements made, do not water too often, once every 2-4 days depending on the climate and weather conditions of your area. Also when planting you should trim them into a basal fan, it looks like an upside down "V", it helps to reduce stress to the plants and to promote growth the both the rhizome and the folage.
