sea power performance

From another thread, I'm curious about the performance of 'Sea Power' in different parts of the country.

I bought 3 rhizomes for the special price of $30 several years ago.

I'm in zone 10 southern California, I've had just a couple small blooms on short spindly stalks with small flowers.

2 of the plants have died and we're now left with 1 puny rhizome.

I recieved a SEAPOWER rhizome and planted it in fall, had a bloom the next year.
It was alot smaller than I imagined.
It didnt make it for the next season, as it died.

I have heard that Schreiner blues don't perform in the southeast. I am surpised to hear that Sea Power hasn't performed well for you. For me it is almost weedy. I have two clumps both needing thinned. It isn't as tall as Yaquina Bay or Titan's Glory, but for windy areas of the country that isn't terrible. I haven't had even a little trouble with flopping or weak stalks. The bloom is as large as any other bloom with the obvious exception of Supreme Sultan and others like it.

Sea Power has not survived a winter here in steamy MS. I have planted it so many times I cannot count. I have two more potted at present and will unpot later. I live in a very hilly area and will plant these on the highest level of my property where no irises have grown. I also will plant some Blyth things there that sulk but manage to survive the winter. Some other punies will go there just to see if they will take off. Starring is also going there.

I ordered Sea Power last year and it disappeared before I could plant it. Truly, I don't know where it went --and there weren't that many places to look. Not an auspicious start.

Ordered it again this year and it does look like a slow starter. It's still just sitting there while other new plantings are sending up leaves and new rhizomes. But you never know...

My first Sea Power rotted in the pot over the winter, but then several others did also. The next rhizome I bought was nice and plump and I put it in enriched soil where it grew wonderfully. Bloomed this May, the spring after planting. Huge blooms, but only 1 stalk. Very nice color. I was careful to keep leaves off it as I wasn't sure the rot in the first one was from the potting or what.
Other plants in that bed multiplied more than Sea Power did. We had the coldest winter in 10 years last winter, but still it only got down to 0 once. We didn't have much snow cover, and always have wind, every season.
The blues by Keppel and Blyth seem to do fine for me here. Walter Moores' plants get huge also!

Guess I'm lucky, Sea Power grows as well as anything here in Nebraska. Good thing since it is still my favorite introduced iris. I get show stalks on most clumps, and no, it isn't all that tall. The seedlings I've gotten from it have been healthy and most with good ruffles and good stalks.
