fava bean seedsaving question

I want to save some fava bean seeds for future planting. The pods are hard right now but they are still green. Do I have to wait until the pods and plants are yellow/brown before I yank the plants out of the ground?

I read somewhere that untreated fava bean seeds germinate poorly, and as result I have never tried saving seeds before. Is this your experience?
