blooming!

I have one iris blooming for me, received it this summer, Eleanor Roosevelt. It hasn't fully opened yet, but looks a beautiful deep purple. Of course, it chose today to bloom, supposed to rain the next couple of days, hopefully it will stop long enough for me to take a pic. I only had 3 reblooming iris before this year, moved 2 of them so I didn't expect those to rebloom really, but I was quite surprised to see this one bloom. It really is nice to see it though!

Nancy, I have ER in five locations and all five are in bloom now. A couple have 3 bloom stalks. I have read that in some areas of the US that ER is almost a comtinious bloomer. It only blooms two times a year for me. I made my morning walk in the rain and noticed at least 5 bloom stalks that I had not seen before. Lee Mincy

Ok, who's going to share one of their ER's with me? I don't have one and I'm so jealous. (grin) I do still have Lady Friend blooming. I also bought a small greenhouse today to grow a few Brugs in this winter. Gosh those things are beautiful too. I can't wait to see them gracing my place along with the irises and daylilies and all kinds of other blooming plants. Happy Gardening, Marian

I ventured in the pouring rain to check out the fully open flower, so very nice. Only one more bud on the stalk, but hey, that is more than anything else is doing for me. Congrats on the greenhouse Marian, I'd love one for myself.

ER never has many buds per stalk at least it does not for me. Once it gets started it just keeps going and going. I am a HIPS member and have a special appreciation for the old ones. ER may not be much if you compare it to today's iris but it is tough as nails to have stayed around this long. Lee Mincy

No More Blooms! I've just started growing Historics Irises and I think each one of them are special in their own way. I will be getting some more of them this Spring from the man in Mt. Pleasant who's getting rid of a bunch. I am also trying to get alot of different blooming plants such as the Brugs, Datura's, Dogwoods, and other blooming trees scatterd all over the place. I'm also working on tropical plants.

Too many plants and not enough time.

Marian, I agree that every iris is beautiful in its own way. It is a shame that so many of the older iris have been lost. I joined HIPS to join with others who want to see these old treasures preserved. I found three more iris that had bloom stalks this morning. Grace Thomas (Zurbrigg 1979) is a historic and there is no freezing temps in our 10 day forecast. The other two are October(Byers 1988) and Priscilla of Corinth(Miller 1996) I have at least 6 different ones in bloom and at least 4 other stalks besides these 3. We have had over 9 inches of rain in the last week after being so dry all summer. Lee Mincy

Oh wow Lee, someone with lots of blooms this late in the year. That is just wonderful. Now be sure and remember me when you start to divide some of those older irises. Are Grace Thomas, October and Priscilla of Corinth Rebloomers or are they blooming out of season like my Lady Friend did?

Oh and doesn't it just figure you go nearly all summer with very little rain and you get it all at once. Now just imagine that much rain for well over 2 months everyday non stop and you will know what I had to deal with this summer.
Our irises don't like that much water.

It was nice to see that your part of the country got some much need rain. I just wish it could have been a nice slow soaking rain for everyone and not those downpours that wash half of everything away.

Guess I'll have to venture out to the big iris patch and see if I can find anything trying to bloom for me. I finally got a start of Walking Irises.

    Happy Gardening,
    Marian

So far all that have bloomed this fall were registered as rebloomers. I have one Noid that sometimes does bloom in the fall that I have been watching, but no bloom stalks as of this morning. Lee Mincy
