When to dig bulbs?

This has probably been asked and answered ... but I need to dig up a lily that has multiplied and spread ... and is taking up too much room in a garden.

What's the best time to dig up the bulbs? And how long will I have before I should get them back in the ground somewhere else?

I'm outside Buffalo, NY in zone 5, and it's an awful 88 degrees and muggy today. (Can you tell I hate this heat?)
