Newbie LB question

I got my very first lucky bamboo (although I've had plants for several months now). It came from a nursery in CA with only one stem in the curled fashion w/2 other straight stems. It is in a planter with the top part gravel glued together, to keep the stems in the center maybe. My worry is: how do I know how to check the water? I'm thinking to break that barrier. Anyone ever had one of these in this kind of planter?

Yes, you should get rid of that stuff.

Thanks for a response and I apologize for my late reply. I did break that barrier and it was to find even more gravel AND white gooey stinky stuff coating the roots. I cut off most of the yellow stalk and am currently rooting all three in water. What do you suppose the white stuff was? Some kind of rooting hormone?
