Dear Ramsay, Master Gardeners are committed to principals of organics where ever possible. Compost, compost, compost and finish with a layer of organic mulch.

Compost can be purchased or home-made. Just make sure they are well-rotted (fresh stuff can burn plants). It is best to use a variety of composts. I alternate with mushroom compost (from a local mushroom farm), commercial compost (which can be purchased in bags or bulk), and a mix of my backyard compost and worm-bin compost.

Non-organic fertilizers have a lot of caveats, but if you prefer those, there are no shortages at your local garden centers. Some are labelled for flowering plants.

Not necessarily so. Around here, the commitment is to sustainability. Could use organic or not.
