This spring i bought acer saccharum var. skutchii, Mexican cloud forest sugar maple. It tolerates alkaline soils, so far for me much more vigorous than big tooth maple. I also have a large big tooth maple specimen.

Big-leaf maple grows in some locations east of the Cascades of WA in situations like the bottoms of big rock-slides where it is pretty much the only tree species - presumably there is seepage under the rocks but otherwise it must be hotter than Hell around the foliage canopies; don't know calcium content of such sites, despite being over there on the dry side it might not still be enough like your place to make the tree possible. I would look at the range of the species on maps and see how close it comes to you in the wild.

winterfell, I received 5 A. skutchii about 6 weeks ago... they started growing while they were in the mailing box... i planted them right away and a couple of them already grew 12"... My A. grandidendatum grows very slooowwwwlyyy here....but no chlorosis signs....

bboy, thanks again for your help.... I believe I asked a similar question a few years ago. As always, finding the right provenance is the hardest part.. the species does not grow anywhere near NM... CA is as close as it gets.... I can always water my trees, but sometimes leaf scorch is a problem during hot/dry spells....
