crimson king maple

i bought a small crimson king last fall. It had no leaves on it but had good branching. Now I am used to seeing crimson kings with big leaves and they are dark purple in color. This summer the one i bought in the fall is showing a red color leaf and they are much smaller than what i have seen. Is this due to age or that it is still newly planted. I am dissapointed with my purchase. The tree looks sparse with the smaller leaves and lighter red color. I wonder if its a differnt type of tree. Anyone have any insight
