Help-JM 'Pixie' is dying!

I have had a pair of Japanese maples in pots for approximately 5 years now. Up until now, they were doing well. I had pruned some small dead wood out of one of them early this spring after those branches didn't leaf out. They were definately dead- no doubt. Now, the tree has its usual lovely burgandy leaves and was looking great, until I walked out this morning and an entire branch had curled up, dead leaves. This happened within 24 hours! I don't see any bugs, but I don't know what to look for. What can I do? I really don't want to lose this tree! Help!
