New to acer, leaf issues!

Hello there,
I am new to keeping acers and never thought I'd own one as I'm not very skilled. Please excuse my lack of knowledge! I purchased one purely because it was only 8 from a supermarket and figured it was worth a go (I knew it wouldn't be in great condition). I've had it two weeks and noticed that the old leaves have started to shrivel and dry up and have basically died. However I have lots of new leaves emerging which are beautiful and vibrant, and much larger than the old leaves, although one or two have come out deformed. Are the shrivelled up leaves due to me not looking after it properly? I don't want the new leaves to suffer the same fate! The Acer is in partial shade/sun and is in a pot. No more than a metre tall so very young.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
