No straw needed with the patchmaster. The straw is to protect the seed and keep moisture in, and the "mulch" in the patchmaster already does that.

If you had a severe problem last year and didn't do anything to solve it, makes sense it might happen again. Buy a bag of Grub-ex and follow the directions.

THanks. I plan to put Grub ex down at the end of May. The patchmaster should start to sprout early next week.

How did the patchmaster perform? I just bought a house and the front lawn is the worst in the neighborhood. I put down the patchmaster about 4 days ago and I am hoping that I'll start seeing seed growth by next week.

The Premium Scotts seeds that I put down in the backyard four weeks ago are growing nicely. I made the mistake in the front yard (four weeks ago) of putting down crabgrass control with the seeds and the seeds didn't germinate. So I broke up the original topsoil and covered it up with Scotts lawn topsoil and applied the patchmaster.

From my understanding, if you put down preventer for weeds, it won't allow any seeds to germinate for months. Except for Tuperson (sp).

As for putting down new top soil, I don't know how well it'll work because when the grass seedlings get into the old preventer it might kill it off. I hope it works out for you.

Patchmaster.... I've never used it, but my neighbor did last year. It worked out well for him, but it took about 2 weeks for the seeds to germinate and he watered it most every day. Me, I know I can't use it based on his results because the seed used seems to be a tall fescue (TF), similar to K31, but thinner blades. I seeded my yard with a TF/KBG mix and it stays very short. The grass the contract originally planted looks terrible with the seed I put down and I feel it's going to take a few years for my seed to take over.

Sorry for the rant.. I just wanted to make a point that even if the Patchmaster seed comes up, it might not look right compared to what you already have in your yard.
