Insight needed

I want to plant my very small mailorder JM's in the ground. The problem being is that they are so small I would hardly call them ornamental at this point for them to stand alone in the prominent spots I want to put them. Currently they are sitting in front of 2 Hibiscus syriacus shrubs which concerns me because of the roots intertwining with each other which will prove very difficult to remove the althea's once the JM's become of substantial size. What I would like to do is remove the althea's & replace them with a perennial grass called Miscanthus sinensis Strictus aka Porcupine grass. Does anyone see any long term problem with doing this that I haven't thought of? I know the grass can live in standing water or live in a dry environment...I'm not sure how this would affect the maple?
