Distressed Maple tree

This is my first time posting - thanks in advance for your understanding!

I'm troubled by the distress in my maple tree - it faces east and gets full sun in all directions except for late afternoon (a good thing).

It's growing in Rochester Hills.

I've attached a few photographs. At first it was suggested that there was a problem with insect damage, but I haven't seen a lot of holes in the bark to suggest this. There is some bark damage.

Someone suggested verticillium wilt or anthracnose..I wasn't getting this idea as I was looking through the manual of woody landscape plants.

Any ideas would be helpful!
