Asian wisterias can be much too aggressive. I am constantly cutting back my neighbor's so it doesn't tear down the fence. It has climbed over many of his trees and all the way to the top of his American holly -- you know how big those get, right?

BUT American wisteria, w. frutescens, is reputedly a slower grower and easier to keep in bounds. It is occasionally offered by online nurseries, and perhaps some swappers have it.

If you don't know whether it's Asian or American, and have limited space, you may want to err on the side of caution.
