Planting Bloodgood Maple in ltd space

I plan to plant a Jap.Boodgood Maple (in NY) in an above ground planter. Depth is 4ft+, width is 30", length is 12ft. The planter is newly constructed of concrete block and is properly waterproofed and drained. Should I use a root barrier in dealing with the 30" width? I've read both that the roots are invasive, and that they aren't. I know of no other ornamental tree that is both colorful and significant to use as an entry tree.
