Protecting Maples through winter

I have several maples Parkway Maples (yikes I know most of you hate them) that were volunteers this spring. Several of them got planted in beds and are doing quite nicely. They range from one foot tall to about three feet tall. I was wondering if they would survive the winter? Do I do anything to protect them? Zone 5 here. Also I have about ten of them growing in pots. I have been reading that the pots go in a garage. ?? My question is why do the ones in pots go inside, and does this mean the ones in the ground will not make it though the winter. I hope this makes sense to you folks. Thanks for the help.
