Woodland Evergreens

Part of our woods next to our driveway was cleared and I am wanting to plant evergreens that will do well in afternoon sun. I would prefer ones that do not grow more than about 12 ft as they would be under the canopy of oak trees. I would prefer natives - any ideas? Holly's maybe?

Not much comes to mind. Camellias if you don't need natives. A mix of native deciduous tall shrubs and short trees could provide screening; like redbuds with red twigged dogwood.

A number of the native hollies would do fine there and you can choose your varities by height. If you are not far from DC, Behnkes has a good assortment of native hollies.

rosebay rhododendrons are a good, sturdy native for an area like that. Keep them shielded from deer until they get big enough. The buds are tasty.
