That is some accomplishment...
Maybe you can give us an idea of what a show quality stalk looks like when you( or someone else) take it to the fair.
Do you cut it, put it in a vase of your own, add something to the water to keep it fresh and then transfer it to one of their budvases when you get there?
Did the judges seem to favor any particular gladiola or dahlia colors this year?
Is this an annual event you enter and have you entered other flowers in the past?

Everyone ought to get to the state fair at least once. A trip to the fair was the only thing for which my father would take us out of school. And it wasn't every year. Other kids got out for vacations and stuff.

Anyway, the fair is a good time. I don't know about the MD fair, but the VA and NC fairs are great fun. Weekdays are better, my father was right.

Gardenwatch, in answer. The trick is to grow a really good glad that blooms for the fair date. I planted a row May 12 for the fair and just happened to come out right. Stake the good looking ones up so they will be nice and straight. The morning of entry day cut it with at least twenty inches of stem below the first floret. Lay it flat in car or van. When you get to the fair there will be people there to help you enter your flower. You might e-mail me this winter for cataloguers who supply good exhibition type bulbs. Steve in Baltimore County.

Unfortunately, not only have I little luck with glads, but life is a mess this year.
