Hi Chris. I believe they can cross pollinate. I don't know if the resulting produce is affected, or whether it's just the seeds that result. Someone else may be able to add more detail.

The fruit will not be affected. My squash and gourds are always intertwined and I have NEVER had a problem. If you plan to save seed, the next generation (next year's plants) may produce unusual fruits. Sqourds anyone?

This is such good news! I have a fairly small garden plot and would like to plant both squash and gourds. I'm not going to save seeds, so shouldn't have any unusual fruits going forward, however, it might be kind of fun to see what shows up! Thanks very much for your response! I really appreciate it!

If you have a small area you may want to check out some of the bush type squash varieties. I have a friend who grows his gourds on a trellis.(A very sturdy one.) Do keep in mind that the bush type squash usually don't produce as heavily as the vining type. Good luck with your garden.
